A dip in the pool can be a great way for the whole family, pets included, to cool off in the summer. Before you let your dog jump in, it helps to remember that not every dog is a natural swimmer and not every pool is a safe place for them.

Never leave your pet unattended near water

Show your dog where the steps or exit are so they can get out on their own, and remember that older dogs or dogs with joint issues like arthritis may tire quickly.

Chlorine and pool chemicals can upset a dog’s stomach and irritate their eyes and skin, so rinse your dog with clean water after a swim and keep a bowl of fresh drinking water nearby so they are not tempted to drink from the pool.
